Dr. Kurtz: Even $11 Million More Would Be Zero Growth: The Courant

Democrats: They can give Candelori $100 million for a wild expansion of the sewer plant as if it is nothing, but they can't support education? How many teachers are being sacrificed to support Candelori's $100 million wet dream at the expense of our children?

Isn't it amazing how warped the priorities of our local Democrats have become?

Kurtz has spent her ten wasted years here in New Britain complaining about lack of money. She does this hoping that the focus will not be on her failures.

She, however had plenty of money for her salary, benefits, traveling expenses and whatever she could spend on gullible board members.

As a teacher I understand the reason teachers are paid at the rates and wages they recieve. The educational training (two degrees, hours of continuing education each yer) is extensive. The problem is that Doris Kurtz is presenting the people of New Britain with a false choice. She is saying that the only way to close a budget shortfall is through firing teachers.

What Dr. Kurtz should be considering is potential operational savings. Most city departments have seen a decrease in power costs over the past few years. Has the amount budgeted by the schools decreased as well? No one can say for sure because this is the first year that the budget is a line item budget as mandated by City Charter. How much of Kurtz's $200,000 budget for the office of Superintendent is truly needed? Could the office still fulfill it's duties with $180,000 similar to other city budget that two a 10% cut two years ago when times were tight.

As Chairman of the Board of Finance and taxation I plan on asking Dr. Kurtz these hard questions when she comes before us later this year. The city and the taxpayers simply can not afford an $11 million increase. I hope that the Board of Education makes a good faith effort to pass a less fanciful budget.

How much could we save by ending the fancy catered lunches for the board and the superintendent?

How much could we save by not printing fancy magazines and producing television quality DVD's to send home with the children featuring advertising for the school district?

Bottom line is enrollment is down, and yes we need less teachers! Yes they can cut spending in many ways. There also needs to be some accountability for all staff to DO THERE JOBS!!! Getting rid of over paid slackers and replacing them with new young ambitious staff would save a ton!! And don't get me startrf with the unions!! They are the ones putting this country out of business!

If you ask me, fixing the crap plant is a better way to spend our money over wasting it on more union slug teachers to do nothing all day because they have tenure and are untouchable waste products.

Laying off 264 is simply a good start!

Mr Mercier should dig into who is paying for the housing of Mr. Kurtz's HORSE. Room and board costs approximately $500.00 a month.
That comes to $6,000 a year or $60,000 for the past ten years.

If Doris rides the horse the horse must be a clydesdale.

Is someone suggesting that the taxpayers are paying to house the good doctor's horse?

I only have one question: does she ride side saddle?
