NEW BRITAIN COMMON COUNCIL MEMBERS CALL FOR MORE OPEN PROCESS IN APPOINTMENT TO FILL COUNCIL VACANCIES

The four Republican members of the New Britain Common Council, Mark Bernacki, Mary Marrocco, Willy Pabon and Lou Salvio, today called upon their colleagues from the Democratic majority to have a more open process when filling the Council vacancy in the 4th ward. The vacancy was created on January 1, 2011 with the resignation of Phil Sherwood.

“Recent appointments to fill vacancies are added to the agenda at the beginning of the meeting, so the public has no opportunity to comment on the person being appointed,” said Minority Leader Lou Salvio. “When members are elected rather than appointed, the public has several months to learn about the candidates and their experience and abilities. Not making known in advance of the meeting who is being put forward to fill a vacancy deprives the public of information it should have access to and adds secrecy rather than sunlight to what should be a transparent operation of local government.”

Under the New Britain City Charter, vacancies are filled by appointment of the Council. The person filling the vacancy must be a member of the same political party as the person who vacated the seat, and if a district member such as former Ald. Sherwood, the replacement must also reside within that district.

Assistant Majority Leader Mark Bernacki continued, “Several people have expressed an interest in serving, but we are taking the unusual step of putting forward a resolution (copy attached) with a name in an attempt to create a more open process than those that have taken place in the past. As a registered Democrat, Joseph Salvio, a lifelong New Britain resident and longtime resident of the Fourth District, meets the Charter criteria to fill this vacancy. I am glad he is willing to serve his community as he has served the City well as Chairman of the Board of Health. I hope that his civic minded offer receives consideration by the Council as a whole.”

Alderpersons Marrocco and Pabon concurred, “It is unfair to present a name to the Council the evening of the meeting and expect that we can make an informed decision without knowing anything about the person being put forward. This unfortunately was the case at the November meeting with the appointment of Alderman Sanchez. We want to stress this is nothing against the persons being appointed (in the case of Alderman Sanchez, the vote to appoint was unanimous), but against a closed process that does not allow for input from the very members of the public that that alderperson will be serving.”

Bernacki concluded, “Certainly the Democratic Council members have the votes to do as they please, but clearly there are discussions among them and with the Democratic Town Committee as to who will fill the vacancy. It is our hope that this will encourage them to open up the process and share that information with the public and their fellow Council members to give that new Council member a positive start.”

John McNamara referred to Joseph Salvio as a "DINO" (Democrat in name only) not a "Rhino."

"Little mac" is dumb but not that dumb!

Why shouldn't the Republicans make a nomination for a Democratic seat, didn't Sherwood make a Republican appointment to the Board of ED, or ii once again Democrats can do whatever they want while Republicans are held to a higher standard.

Joseph Salvio is married and the father of two: a son, 20, and daughter, 16. He is a New Britain resident for over 48 years. He is a professional in the health care field and has partnered with a former college classmate to form his own health care advocacy business.

Since Joseph Salvio has lived in NB all his life ( some 48 yrs.) the current DTC Chairman John McNamara and other DTC folks can make no such claim.

2 years ago, as many may remember, the Republican Town Committee nominated Jamie Giantonio to run for the Board of Education. Democratic Town Committee member, the "esteemed" Phil Sherwood, took it upon himself to contact Republican Leslie Jacobs to run on the Democratic ticket for the same position. It was no secret Ms Jacobs is a "do nothing" member of any committee she's on...both on the GOP town committee, of which she hasn't been a member of for a few years now, and on the Board of Ed. Now she is pursuing her career as a home organizer which she very well may be good at. Jamie Giantonio is co-chairman of the GOP town committee, along with Dwight Blint, chairman. The GOP town committee is on it's way to becoming successful in including everyone to get involved in the political process...not so for the Democrats. Now that Mr. Sherwood is out of the picture, perhaps the Dumbocraps can get it's act together

The Democrats have a long history of only including people in the political process who agree with their radical socialist views. They then viciously attack anyone who doesn't agree that the government should control our lives from the cradle to the grave, not only telling us when we can wipe our a33es, but now they want to decide when each of us should die.

If you disagree with these socialists, then they resort to calling you names. Anyone who believes in freedom and doesn't want the government running their lives is branded a nut job or a loon, when in fact it is the Democrats who are destroying the very values that America was founded on.
