New Britain's Special Council meeting held this Evening:

Amazingly, the Democratic council  members were in total agreement to not increase the mill rate for the fiscal year of 2011-2012.

They recommended funding for the public safety department to full staffing, and dial-a-ride also was funded.

The Council's President Pro-Tempore Alderman Trueworhty stated that there still more work to be done with additional adjustments to be made like more funding for the Board of Education, etc. He suggested that the Mayor should bring people to the table to discuss what can be done in switching funds to make things work by avoiding layoffs at city hall.

The package proposed by the Democrats was passed with Alderwoman Mary Marrocco, the only Republican in attendance, voting "NO."

If I read this story correctly, Trueworthy said this budget needed much more work, and then right after admitting his budget was flawed, he and his mindless minions proceeded to ram it through.

It would have been better for New Britain had the Council Democrats merely acted to pass the Mayor's proposed budget. But the Dems merely went a step futher and will try to make creating a realistic budget an impossibility for Stewart - a budget that uses smoke and mirrors to avoid a tax increase while protecting a few pet projects or connected people.

Where is the property the Dems want to sell that increases revenue by $1M? Will any of the 5 Council Democrats that have City jobs suffer from inevitable layoffs?

I will ask and urge the Mayor to veto the changes made to his budget by the hapless Dems.
