A Question for The New Britain Council Members?

I have been told that the ED of the Mattbasssett claimed that sending the materail to the MDC is too costly.

WHY?

Has the City Council asked the MDC to price this proposal of taking all of Mattbasset's material?

He said, it would be more costly to truck the sludge to MDC ($2M/year) than to bild a new incinerator. Even if it costs that much - and I doubt it -, Mattabassett could send it to MDC for the next 8 + years.

He also said that sending it by rail or by barge up the CT River are not viable options.

I don't feel that this subject has been explored sufficiently. As for the question asked by the blogger, New Britain has not costed out sending the sludge to MDC.

Customers of MDC by far have the lowest water/sewer rates in the state.

I can't believe that paying the high cost of doing it yourself could possibly be a better deal than turning the entire district over to the MDC for both water & sewer.

A total transfer of the water & sewer departments in New Britain, over to the MDC could help fund the city for many years, especially if the council were to work out an annual payment plan for MDC to buy out New Britain's properties and equipment.

The Town of Deep River has a fancy sewage truck that they use to truck the town's sewage to the MDC plant in Hartford on a daily basis.

I think what the executive director might be afraid of, is that if these towns selected such a process, you would no longer need him or his high salary, taxpayer funded take home car and benefits.

The council revised his revenue estimates upward by projecting that the city will take in an extra $1 million by selling municipal land. That will salvage some of the jobs and services that are on the line, council President Michael Trueworthy said.........

Selling both the water department and the Mattabassett to MDC would accommodate this need to sell assets for years to come. You could negotiate with MDC for a payout over 20 years or even longer for the transfer of land and equipment to their district which would help keep New Britain's taxes low, and then the people would be dealing with MDC for their water and sewer. MDC already has some of the cleanest water in the state, and the lowest rates of any water company.

Everyone wins, except the power hungry zealots at the Mattabassett who seem to have forgotten long ago who they are supposed to be representing.
