FRANKSMITHSAYSNB EDITORIAL:
With New Britain's Mayor requesting the city's managers to submit a 10% reduction to their annual budget. The managers have not publicly suggested how his/her department may survive without a certain number of existing employees however, during the last Council's public participation The Library's Director, Ms. Pat Rutkowski, explained that her budget represents 1.3% of the city's overall budget. She suggested to the Council members that if you had a pie chart of the city's expenditures you would "barely see library on this chart."
She continued by citing that her department enriches many lives servicing from July 2010 to today 332,000 residents. She concluded that she cannot find any way to reduce her budget request by 10%.
Tonight the joint board of Education Board members with the council members will discuss the Board's budget needs.
Let us hope that the remaining managers with cooler heads will be more cooperative to the mayor's request for the sake of the taxpayers.

Unfortunately we have people like Phil Sherwood who will stop at nothing to waste taxpayer money. Even though he is not on the Council anymore he is still up to his old dirty tricks by using the Police Department to investigate republicans like Cris Carillo. It is Sherwood and his socialist ilk that drain funds from the Library.
How can you service 322,000 residents when the entire city only has 85,000 residents?
I guess we are paying for library services for residents of other communities? -or- someone is possibly exaggerating???
Speaking as a resident of sixty years and a very long user of our beautiful libraries, I think that their money is well spent. I always contribute when asked. Even when times are tough, I remember what it meant to me and all those years that my children used their resourses.
Meanwhile, the BOE squanders money. I was there. I know.
10% across the board should be easy for every department, all they need to do that is common sense!
30% in the parks department is easy to, considering we have employees driving around on lawnmowers doing nothing but wasting fuel and putting hours on the equipment! And why do we need them in the winter?
40% in public works is even easier considering this past winter employees worked there overtime then came in for there regular shift and went to sleep, and most recently I personally found employees hiding behind beehive field for 45 minutes, not to mention the gross abuse of overtime during last summers storms that dropped trees and caused loss of power to the city( 22 men st one job with only 6 working is a joke)
If we could actually stop playing political games and start running this city like a business we could see our taxes go down and some long lost services restored
Why not look into contacting out the city schools to a private company like New Haven just did?

Sir: Do you think it's possible that some people come in more that once? It's like saying that if people make 5 trips to the hospital only the first one counts.!

Instead of helping the City of New Britain by demanding adequate funding for education and other city services or fighting to stop these unfunded
mandates, some members of our state delegation seem more focused on meddling with our city budget and placing their own political aspirations in
the forefront, instead of looking out for the genuine interest of taxpayers.
If elected as the State Representative for the 24th District in New Britain, I will not get involved in the petty political games that we have all become a victim of this year. Instead, I will spend my time in Hartford fighting for the taxpayers of New Britain.
This great city needs proper representation and state-level leadership to help alleviate the ever
increasing tax burdens residents face. Our state legislators cannot keep writing checks that we have to pay. They cannot continue to tax us more and
more. Send me to Hartford, and I will tell them that the well has run dry.
Cris Carillo
Candidate for State Representative 2010
24th District of New Britain, CT
For a politician to use the police department to investigate a potential political opponent is disgusting. Chris Carillo should have Phil Sherwood charged with an unfounded request for an investigation. If Sherwood or any politician desires to investigate a political opponent, he/she should hire a private investigator at his/her own expense, or at the expense of his/her political party.
As for the library servicing 322,000 in a city of 70,000 more or less residents, do not forget there are many students at CCSU who most likely use the library for academic reasons,
Phil Sherwood lives on in the New Britain Common Council; his personna lives on in Dave DeFronzo, Mike Trueworthy and others who continue their unjustified, personal attacks on current and future Reublicans as well as Mayor Stewart and members of his administration.
With everything being so available on the internet, do we really even need libraries anymore?
At the risk of offending Benjamin Franklin, it would seem they have outlived their usefulness.
No offense Ben, but due to the internet, libraries have outlived their need in the same way that many cities have outlived the volunteer fire dept--another invention of Mr. Franklin's.
So many references to Ben Franklin.
Mr. Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts and fled to Pennsylvania because even back then Boston was apparently under siege by radical socialists.
Once arriving in Philadelphia, Mr. Franklin purchased the Pennsylvania Gazette, which he maintained as the owner, publisher, and even penned many of his own stories.
I believe that if Mr. Franklin, a great newspaper man of his time, were able to come back and read the one sided reporting of our local rag, that Mr. Franklin would be ashamed to admit his position of prominence among the forth estate.
