Costco Wins First Round In New Britain: The Courant

The naysayers re this project came out last night and voiced their objections at a meeting of the City Plan Commission. Only one speaker was mentioned in the Courant article. The following represents some of what he said:
Stanley Street resident Robert Pleines summed up the case against the project, telling commissioners " ... that New Britain would be trading away scarce undeveloped land for the over-hyped lure of economic development. This would be against the original intention of the deed, it would be the loss of park land used and needed by the public, and it would mean destruction of a wildlife habitat," Pleines said. "We need jobs and taxes, but the people who will run this store will be transferred from other stores. The rest of the jobs will be filled at a job fair for all our neighboring communities."

Now, I consider most of what Mr. Pleines said as his version of , "over hyped" objections and scare tactics by some folks that wish to advance only their own personal interests.
And as far as outlandish claims by Mr. Pleines, I quote, "We need jobs and taxes, but the people who will run this store will be transferred from other stores. The rest of the jobs will be filled at a job fair for all our neighboring communities." Mr. Pleines speaks as though he is an authority on COSTCO hiring practices - a typical example of over hyped scare tactics and a prevarication, to boot.

layout plan, If any Council members told you there is a written plan that they saw, THAT IS NOT TRUE!

Anonymous said...: Perhaps Rep. Timothy O'Brien and his political colleagues can hold a "demonstration" at Target just as they did at New Britain's WalMart last year, Target will then close it's New Britain store, making additional property available for the Costco store.; June 8, 2011 at 3:13 AM
