" Thank you to The Herald Editorial Staff for yet another timely opinion on the subject of the COSTCO proposal and also for weighing in on the "Aquinas" proposal.
Some Council members make the same old tired claim that, "we have a lot of questions." Fact is, the questions have been answered. Some of the claims/questions made by some opponents can't be answered, they are simply posed to muddy the waters; e.g., "what happens in 10 - 20 years if COSTCO fails?" Answer, the same things that happened to Shaw's and WalMart. Incidentally, Shaw's closed many of its stores, not only the one in NB.
Add to all of this, all of those opponents that have become lawyers and are opining on what were Alix Stanley's; some of these people that have "connections" with the State AG's office have started rumors that perhaps our Mayor and even one of the Council members have done "illegal things." The situation has gotten out of hand. One opponent even said to me and to two other Council members, "I don't care what you say, I will always be against this proposal."
Given enough specious arguments and now, false accusations of wrong doings, I wouldn't be surprised if COSTCO and Community Builders said "GOODBYE" to NB. "It's like deja vu all over again."
Again, Thank you to The Herald. "

Help stop the biggest waste of taxpayer money in Connecticut history and maybe you will have the money to fund the aid to municipalities.

Even though Sherwood is working to re-elect the gay mayor, it seems as if his hand is here working to destroy yet another business opportunity.

NEW BRITAIN — It was a moment Rudy Wind felt should have come decades sooner. But the New Britain resident who served in the U.S. Navy in 1964 was happy to finally receive a Connecticut Wartime Service Medal on Friday along with hundreds of his peers.

“This is wonderful,” Wind said as he picked up his matching certificate. “It’s about time. They have to do more for the veterans.”

Wind’s sentiment was echoed by the guest speaker, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who told the crowd of several hundred veterans and their families that more needs to be done for soldiers returning from recent wars.

“This is the greatest nation in the world,” Blumenthal said. “75,000 to 100,000 veterans are homeless on this night. The unemployment rate of those who have returned from recent wars is 25 percent and a full third are suffering from traumatic brain injury or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and haven’t been diagnosed, let alone treated. We must do better.”

Blumenthal and dignitaries including Commissioner Linda S. Schwartz of the state Department of Veterans Affairs and retired Col. Tom Stefanko, director of advocacy and assistance, were on hand to honor local veterans as part of an initiative sponsored by the New Britain state assembly delegation.

The delegation had worked for months to gather the names of New Britain veterans and then organize a fitting ceremony to hand out the medals.

Veterans and their families filled the auditorium at Slade Middle School to collect their recognition.

Many came in wheelchairs or with walkers. But none came away empty-handed.

Schwartz told the crowd that the medals were meant for those who stepped forward in wartime, not knowing what they might face.

“You had no idea what awaited you,” she said. “But you came forward and through whatever fate held, there was no rhyme or reason why you were spared and others weren’t. But never be ashamed. War is not for the faint of heart. You deserve these medals.”
