Letter to the Editor 9-25-11

GOP candidates seek community involvement

Last week there was a Republican primary election in New Britain’s Ward 4. Judging from the turnout it was one of the better-kept secrets in the City. During the previous two weeks we either visited or made calls to more than 300 households in Ward 4 to get out the vote and seek support for the primary. Many of the Republican voters we talked to did not even know about the primary, let alone who was running. Some thought we were calling about the Democratic Mayoral primary and hung up before we could explain who we were.

We thank the voters who came out to support us. We also thank challenger Rick Guinness for getting our campaigns moving several weeks before we would have otherwise begun.

Though we won the primary election we were surprised and disappointed at the low turnout. Our platform calls for more community involvement in City affairs. One of the most basic ways to participate is voting in municipal elections. Just because there are no national or state-wide offices in an election does not mean that voters should stay home on Election Day. You can’t complain about elected City officials if you don’t vote!

Too many local issues are framed in early meetings with very little public participation. Months later when these items come before the Common Council and are published in the media, some of our citizens are unhappy with the plans presented. This happens over and over.

The time for your input is early in the planning process, before the plans solidify. Don’t let a handful of people influence all the decisions. Get involved early and make your views known. Regardless of your party preference, get out and vote on November 8th. You owe it to yourselves and to our City.

The 3 city of New Britain governing bodies authorized to approve the sale of the Costco land are meeting week of Sept. 26th, 2011 at City Hall. If you have any concerns about this sale or future threats to the Stanley Park area, we urge you to attend the meetings!

The word in the alleys and by-ways of New Britain and town of Newington, that NB Alderman Mike Trueworthy has contacted some Newington Democratic politicans, and is trying to get them to squash the Costco deal by legal action on the DOT land in Newington needed for the Costco "B" Plan.

Maureen Klett in Newington is said to be trying to contact New Britain officials into blocking the Hartford-NB Busway in return for releasing the locked-in Newington DOT land on Route 9 - the "Central Connecticut Expwy"

More fun and games from Trueworthy tribe????

Since Council President Mike Trueworthy, Ward 4 Ald David DeFronzo and Mayoral Nominee Tim O’Brien, have questioned the original Costco "A" Plan that now has given way to a substitute "B" Plan involving the acquisition of state land in Newington with a re-configuration of the golf course.

Representatives of Costco clearly covet the land adjacent to the Target Store in NB because of its proximity to Westfarms Mall and Corbin’s Corner, one of the state’s biggest retail centers.

You mean Trueworthy is finally doing something that makes sense?

This busway boondoggle is the biggest waste of money this state has ever seen. I have personally written to Speaker Behner begging him to withhold the financing for this, because it is clearly the biggest waste of money ever proposed!

Trueworthy could actually earn my vote by this one move--derailing this waste of our money any way possible!

THE M & M PAIR (MAUREEN & MIKE) SHOULD WATCH THEMSELVES; THEY ARE NOW MESSING WITH THE FEDS. Newington doesn't own the land, DOT does. Maureen Klett is simply overly impressed with herself; Trueworthy is delusional, the two of them make a pair made for prime time TV in the "crazy house."
