I guess this close to an election, even these radical communists didn't want to have their fingerprints on running yet another employer out of the city, like they did with Walmart.
With the Stanley Park Land off the table, the Zoning Commitee of 15 New Britain Aldermen voted yes on Wednesday night 09/14/11 to rezone golf course land on east side of Hartford Road (Route 9} from residential to business use that will allow Costco to buy about 15 acres of land on the northern end of the golf course for development of the Costco Mega-Store.
" Residents should not be fooled by the unanimous vote to allow a zone change on Hartford Rd. ( a portion of the SGC). The area is already zoned for single family housing development. The City applied for the zone change, not COSTCO.
Council Democrats are already plotting to block the COSTCO proposal. That should be evident to anybody that attended or watched the live broadcast of the Council meeting.
E.G., One resident spoke and praised those on the Council (all Dems) who blocked the Aquinas proposal. Bob Pleines was quoted liberally by reporter Stoace; Pleines first showed up at a Council meeting months ago and said, no matter what you tell me, I'll always be against this proposal.
Council comments from certain Dem members, pointed very definitely to the fact that Costco, like Aquinas will be going down the tubes. The zone change vote was just a charade but, a necessay first step. Although necessary, it was an innocuous vote that will not deter naysayers.
Now that the use of AW Stanley Park Woods has been dropped, opponents have come up with different objections - an especially amusing scenario was offered by a non-resident, CCSU, Ornithology teacher re losing a portion of her anatomy if Costco is approved. Now, it's all about the deed, the deed, the deed.
As I said at the meeting last night, no proposal from Costco will ever be perfect, nothing is, but we should be working toward the common good for the residents of New Britain. Opponents will never be satisfied, they will always come up with "another thousand questions" that haven't been answered. These opponents, like Mr. Pleines, non resident CCSU teachers and some Dem Council members have most convincingly already demonstrated their intransigent positions. "
The democratic side of the common council isle starting with Alderman Trueworthy poke on how he will oppose any zone change followed by Alderman DeFronzo tying up the meeting with useless time consuming comments because the vote was 15-0 passing the zone change.
