Arpaio to cooperate, not 'back down'

Accused by the Justice Department of running an agency rife with civil-rights violations, Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona faces a difficult choice: agree to a long and possibly contentious process of federal monitoring or enter an unprecedented legal battle for control of his office.

The feds say that Arpaio has to decide to cooperate with them by January 4, 2012 after which they'll have 60 days to fix things or the U.S. Attorney's Office will sue.

Sheriff Arpaio stated, "We're going to work with them. We have for three years. But one thing I'm not going to agree to is to be controlled by some federal monitor or something. I'm the elected sheriff here in Arizona, and I report to the 4 million voters in the county."

Now the federal government is circumventing local elections by inserting the justice department into an elected official's office to dictate how he can run his office, despite the fact that the 4 million voters in his county have overwhelmingly re-elected Sheriff Arpaio 5 times. If there was so much anti-Latino discrimination going on as the communist regime running our country alleges, then why did the 4 million voters (85% of which are Latino) re-elect this old white man over the 5 Latino opponents that have run against him since 1984?

The Latinos who are legal residents have overwhelmingly re-elected this man time and again, showing that the legal Latinos support his efforts against the criminals who don't belong in this country.

Imagine the outcry if when George W. Bush were President, he had inserted a federal authority to micromanage the socialist New Britain City Council simply for being un-American?
