New Britain Mayor Tim O'Brien appeared on channel three this morning.

To announce his displeasure of the existing contract that was negotiated by his predecessor but has to accept the deal in order to prevent court cost that the city would be exposed too.

He went on to explain that he is going to demand that Costco hire only city residents.

If Costco falls into that trap will a union vote occur with these so called city residents?

Wait until the usual band of radicals if protesting in front of their store, day after day. Costco will regret the day they ever got involved in a communist city like New Britain.

Did you see the wacky outfit he was wearing? I thought he looked more like a circus clown than a mayor!

I hope voters are satisfied with this weirdo.

Right from the beginning Costco said they would hire qualfied applicants from New Britain.

O'Brien is being led around by the nose with the DeFronzo faction in New Britain. The DeFronzo faction is doing all they can to blame Stewart for everything it doesn't like, perhaps paving the way for a Dave DeFronzo run for Mayor in the future. Dave DeFronzo voted against every Stewart economic recovery proposal.
O'Brien also forgets that the previous Parks Board had Democrats on it.
It would probably be against the law to demand that Costco hire only NB residents. Costco is admittedly a non-union company; also notable is that Costco gives employees better than union benefits. Costco has also said that some managerial employees would have to come from other stores because you can't start with all "green" people who don't know the operation.
A Herald letter to the editor today has some "omniscient" person predicting that the store will be poorly constructed, last only a short time, etc. Where do these people come from? How do they "know" all this stuff?

If Costco has to hire all New Britain residents then everyone and anyone who receives a paycheck from the city should also be a resident. Set by example. After all we need to give jobs to are own residents and tax payers.

Other than Sherwood trying to justify his salary what was the "news" worthiness of the broadcast?

No kidding we want the jobs. Mayor Stewart stated that since day one. Requiring all jobs be New Britain residents is ridiculous considering Costco already mentioned that their management team is promoted from within and that some would move to the new store. Who said these folks ALL lived in New Britain?

Once again, O'Brien is trying to solve a problem that does not exist.

Frank that clause was put into that contract to protect the City from people like O'Brien and Sherwood, Trueworthy, Zagorsky and Bob "I'm a closet historian" Pleines. To lose a potential windfall like this project to ignorance would be a tremendous loss for the city of NB.
Watching this lunatic on TV as if he actually knows what he is talking about is laughable. He dresses like he got his clothes from the Salvation Army or the Friendship Center.

They must lead him around by the nose to avoid touching his slimy hands?

typical liberals--demonize those evil rich employers at all cost. How dare they make a profit!

Is there any business in the U.S. whose employees are all from one town, unless there are less than 5 people? Is the Mayor from la-la land??????

I agree that based on the mayor's position that every single Costco employee must live in New Britain, he should lead by example and force every single city employee to move into the city even though most of the city employees live elsewhere simply because they make so much money that they can afford to live in better towns than New Britain.

Once the mayor accomplishes 100% of all his city employees living within the city, then and only then should he even suggest such a radical position to Costco.

Are the New Britain no-show voters happy yet?

Can't wait for this year's property tax bill and reval
numbers. Let me guess Stewart will be blamed.

The Costco developers will leave NB for an adjacent town where they will be received without incident and their money will be welcomed.

We will have our parks and taxes and taxes and taxes and more taxes and support the unemployed.

This is what happens when you elect radical extremist zealots who have no experience running a business.

More unemployment

More shuttered businesses

More welfare, which is what most liberals want anyway, to convert the entire state to a welfare state where no one works and everyone lives free off the government, except who will be left to pay for their free rides?
