AT BOARD OF EDUCATION BUDGET HEARING THE CPOA WAS WELL REPRESENTED.
Ms. Ann Mikulak citing that the board's proposal was entirely inflated and "I know how it's done, I used to work here."
But Helene Groman asked the best question of the night…."Where is this money going to come from?"

Educations responsibility is to request from the city the monies to give our children the BEST education possible no matter what the cost, The City Councils RESPONSIBILTY is to give the BOE the money to allow our chidren to have BEST education.
Now hear is the problem - - - - The BOE has done its job and the council must do theirs. However the councils is responsible to the tax payers and the taxpayers CANNOT afford the cost of education.
Everyone is between a rock and a hard place. The two sides must reach a middle ground thatthey are both comfortable.
Our FUTURE is in our children. Parents and grandparents have all made sacrifices for their children
now is the time for people to stand up and be counted.
On the contrary, the Board of education's responsibility is not to spend as much as possible, but to get the highest possible value for every dollar it spends.
I see from the Courant article that this is all somehow Tim Stewart's fault. What a surprise.
Holy cow! Jim Sanders' comments are so full of writing mistakes that one is left wondering if his thinking is too (likewise).

Wouldn't vouchers go a long way towards solving the problem since you could drastically reduce staff and the associated cost of benefits?
The Courant story mentioned the possibility of eliminating 23 Psychologists. After we get rid of 23 of them, how many more will we still have left and what possible reason do we have for needing so many psychologists in the first place?
Jim Sanders is in his final term on the BOE. Unfortunately, he can say anything he wants. Yes, his writing and spelling skills are deplorable. One wonders why his wife does not edit his stuff. Embarrassing.
Where is the money going to come from? Why it is going to be squeezed out of you and me.
We all hear about the high taxes in here in NB and then we hear about how much higher they are in Hartford and West Hartford. Be prepared. As a realtor, you would be shocked to see the tax bills in other cities. I have personally witnessed the elderly losing their homes when retirement incomes leave nothing to live on after paying their property taxes. I saw that an elderly man was hovering in one room near an electric heater when he could no longer buy oil. Too ashamed to tell his family out of state. Too proud to seek help. The taxes on his basic ranch home, $8750.00.
Tim Stewart took a lot of flack and is being blamed now. But he knew and he worked hard to avoid taking the residents of New Britain to levels of taxation like Hartford and West Hartford. New Britain taxes while higher than surrounding suburban towns are still relative to surrounding towns and we receive significantly more services.
Voters spoke in November. They had a choice between an experienced long time city business person or a career politician with a record of voting to tax.
Be prepared.
Mr. Sanders you know nothing but educational rhetoric from being on the BOE too long! When has the BOE ever sent a budget to the city that was a reasonable request? Never because you all are of the mindset that money is the solution when in fact it is not!
While everyone especially parents appreciates the advocacy for their children, the vast majority of taxpayers do not have kids in the system thus there is where the problem lies. It is the state's responsibility to provide an education to our children not the city's. Let them fund it entirely and we would not be having this conversation right? And one other point to Mr.Sanders remarks, it is the council's responsibility to fund education to the MBR not to give them the best of everything because that never guarantees success!
I was just watching Channel 8 news, and they offered as a solution to the state's educational reform that school vouchers would be a good fix, so why not try it here in New Britain. Who could oppose giving freedom of choice to parents?
I just love how the mere mention of Jimmy Sanders makes these liberals in this town come unglued. Anyone who disturbs these radicals that much is OK by me!
I wrote one of those comments and they do not come anymore conserative than me! So there!
The Times of the unions were in the past, people these days are smarter and can see for themselves what the unions are all about. They protect the lazy and the milkers of the system.
Clearly the Hartford Courant knows a lot about the New Britain school system with today's story that "losers raise losers"
