The old saying goes, “Nothing is certain in life except death and taxes.” While this is true, I would like to point out that concerning death we have been making marvelous progress with medicine these past few decades. Taxes, on the other hand, are not going away any time soon. Taxes are important; they allow government to provide us with crucial services, such as education, sanitation, and safety. They enable us, as a society, to cope with disasters such as the blizzard we faced this past October or the tropical storm that effected so many of us last August.

Taxes are, in short, a payment for services rendered. However, unlike any other service that we may pay for, taxes are not voluntary. If I feel that my mechanic is not doing an adequate job servicing my car then I can take my car, and my money, to a different mechanic. But if I feel that my government is not adequately servicing my roads it is far more difficult for me to take my tax dollars elsewhere. Since payment of taxes is a legal and civic obligation it means that citizen oversight of government spending is extremely important. We cannot control whether or not we pay taxes, but we can certainly fight to make certain that our money is spent wisely.

That is why the Citizens’ Property Owners Association of New Britain is an important voice in our community. We are a group dedicated to supporting New Britain property owners’ rights and interests. We believe that a fiscally responsible government is crucial for upholding the social contract between tax payer and tax collector. While we fully understand the needs for taxes, we also understand that excessive taxation places a burden on the taxpaying citizens of our city. The CPOA recognizes that local property owners have a special stake in the budget process; while all residents may receive municipal services, it is the property owners who pay for them.

The CPOA serves as a watchdog against the misuse of tax dollars and as an advocacy group for property owners within New Britain. As a group, the CPOA is non-partisan and open to members of any political party. We hold regular meetings to discuss and address property owner concerns and then advocate for our members in municipal government. Our membership is open to any property owner who resides within the city of New Britain. In line with our philosophy of fiscal responsibility, our annual membership dues are only $10.
