TONIGHT'S SPECIAL SESSION COUNCIL MEETING ON FLAT FEE PLAN FOR LANDLORDS:

In spite of the fervent effort, on the part of Alderman Jamie Giantonio, warning his fellow councilors to not vote for this resolution before you tonight. Because the city will not see any benefit from an affirmative vote for years to come. "Because this is selective targeting of landlords and developers with many law suits that will result against our city."   "You are being asked to approve a $150 per unit fee tonight but it opens the door to changing that fee, at a later date, to $250 and later on to $300 where does it stop?"

His hard fight fell apart with only three others voting with him and the infamous $150 licensing fee per unit resolution was passed by the common council. With the council chamber filled with an over capacity of attendees with standing room only that extending into the hallway.

The Hot Spot fee against landlords was also passed with some attendees indicating such a fee should be passed onto the "troblesome tenants".

Shame on Nick Mercier for his theatrics with the tape. Nick did nothing but help turn a professional meeting into a circus. I'm a republican and I didn't agree with the new ordinance but I really felt like Nick crossed the line tonight and he does not represent me or my personal interests.

You are certainly welcome to your opinion, but I felt that it was more than justified considering the despicable actions of the Common Council. There was no need to call an "emergency session" to enact ordinances which could have easily been addressed at next weeks regular meeting.

The O'Brien administration sought to use an "emergency" meeting for the sole purpose of silencing the public opposition.

If you'd like to discuss it personally with me I am easy to get in touch with. But there was not one property owner, landlord, or tenant who I spoke with personally who feels the actions I took last night were inappropriate. And I'm inclined to agree with them.

Shame on poster #1 for faulting a guy from trying to stop this.

Quick question, if a building's vacant is there a charge? I would think no because there are NO rental units.

This poster is grateful for Mr. Mercier's efforts. Thanks & stick to your guns.

Unfortunately, many law suits will be generated by large property owners that will tie up the city for years. The budget will have additional legal cost to be concerned with.

Emanuel, we have your resolution that cost the rich landlords to provide those that need a place to live, as you stated.

A disgusted Republican concerned taxpayer.

You look at what passes for leadership in New Britain today. The people voted these guys in. I know Stewart, Bernacki, Marrocco and Salvio would not have supported this and would have come up with alternatives to this egregious tax. They also know the ramifications of what this tax will do to home prices. FALL.

I was at the meeting lastnight and couldn't believe the former chairman of the finance committee was handing out duct tape. It insulted me and I have voted republican for my entire life. Grow up and show some respect even if you disagree. It made Lou Salvio look tame.

As I stated before, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, not a single person who I spoke to in the audience last night was "insulted" by my actions. Rather, they were insulted by the actions of the Common Council in bringing this bill to a vote in a sneaky and underhanded manner.

I'm not sure why you would post anonymously saying how insulted you are. You speak of showing "respect" but during the meeting I obeyed every rule of the chambers. I did not shout out, I did not catcall, but I felt obligated to show, visually, my disgust since so many had their voices denied.

I may have placed duct tape over my mouth, but it was the Common Council that chose to silence us.

You speak of respect? Then at least have the respect to contact me in person and tell me how disgusted you are.

Calling a special meeting in order to silence public opposition is an insult to Democracy.
