Candidates Profiles in The Herald Questioned

On November 5, 2013, in the Municipal Election, among those seeking to represent the City in various elective offices are those people seeking the office of Common Council Member - Alderman, Alderwoman. Thirty New Britain residents will vie for fifteen positions on the Common Council. Fifteen (15) will run on the Republican Ticket headed by, Erin Stewart. These fifteen comprise Republican, Democrat, Independent and Unaffiliated candidates. The other fifteen will run with current mayor, Tim O’Brien; all are Democrats. At this time, four of these Democrats are endorsed by the Working Families (Acorn) Party along with O’Brien and the D Candidate for Tax Collector.

The New Britain Herald is currently running profiles of the candidates for Common Council. The Herald Staff Writer preparing the profiles asks each candidate a series of prepared questions. Some responses from commenter's on line regarding the profiles have indicated that in their opinion, the questions are “softball” ones and that the profiles are little more than “puff pieces.”

The most important question that is omitted from these profiles is, “ What is the job of a Common Council Member?” From the questions asked, little about the candidate - other than party affiliation - can be learned as to what they know of their responsibilities, if elected.

What is known thus far is limited to candidates‘ most respected Council office holders, past or present, “favorite” USA President, favorite book, etc. Perhaps, the only thing that people/readers will take away from these profiles is the political party which the candidate is representing.

While I appreciate this effort by the Herald I feel that little can be learned about persons being profiled.

You're so right Lou. The profiles are nothing more than puff pieces - it's obviously biased reporting as well since the democrats get headline news space, and the republicans keep getting back paged.

As I've said before Lou, knowing more about you, in your case, does not help you.

Can someone other than Lou chime in for a change?

The questions posed from the Herald could be a bit more informative but is this really the issue Lou thinks is worth blasting them on?

Lou, don't give people reason to believe you're losing your facilities. We need your teaparty types on the council.

I would suggest a televised debate, except that in the past hasn't the debate generally been moderated by a fellow extreme liberal who will likely gear the questions toward making the liberals look like the second coming of Christ?

Lou is correct...wow Dems must be afraid of him?

I am meeting with Robert S. from the Herald to do my interview next wednesday. We will see what comes from that. I agree that so far, its been a worthless effort since there is zero information coming from these interviews that is worthwhile, or even semi-important. I would like to hear plans, ideas, what these candidates stand for. I dont care about R's vs D's. That is a total waste of time. You know what would be a good question? How about :What most disgusts you about the campaign process?

Why would they be afraid of him? Explain to me how Lou Salvio can win in the newly drawn lines of the 5th Ward?
