Walmart Closing It's Farmington Avenue Store In New Britain CT...
Walmart announced today, July 1, 2009 that it will close the New Britain Walmart store, located at 655 Farmington Avenue, on August 31, 2009.
The store employs 162 workers. Walmart has 29 regular stores, five super-centers and three Sam's Club locations in Connecticut. The New Britain store opened September 1997.
Officials said the store's employees are eligible to apply for positions at area Walmart Stores and Sam's Club.
Frank: I suppose Tim O'Brien and Sherwood will find a way to blame this on the mayor! The Crabtree & Evelyn news will be blamed on Governor Rell. Of course it has nothing to do with the legislature chasing businesses out of CT with their tax package.
It must be the mayor's fault, and not the ever increasing property taxes forced through by a majority of aldermen who don't even pay a dime in taxes in New Britain, and many of those Aldermen who are supposed to, can't seem to pay them on time.
NEW BRITAIN - Phil Sherwood, Democratic Alderman in New Britain's 4th Ward, said when he worked for Walmart he saw harassment and intimidation of racial minorities.
Walmart is the target of the largest class-action lawsuit in U.S. history Sherwood said - The issue is [sexual] discrimination.
Sherwood stated the lack of Spanish-speaking manager could be a problem - It breeds an atmosphere of insensitivity.
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal isn't convinced. He told Working Families protesters at July 31, 2007 rally at NB Walmart he will investigate allegations of systematic discrimination against Spanish-speaking employees by Walmart. "Racism has no place anywhere," he said.
New Britain’s Rep. Tim O’Brien and Alderman Phil Sherwood came in support of the rally. The Connecticut Working Families is a coalition of community organizations, labor unions and neighborhood activists "united to fight for a fair economy."
What a shame!! Wal*Mart will surely be missed by a majority of New Britain shoppers, as was Caldors when that store closed. Is it possible that the owners of the property have upped the lease they charge Wal*Mart, rather than the antics of our local politicians?
How about the rallies that were had at the facility to protest lack of medical benefits and discriminatory practices by the company by Sherwood , O'Brien and the rest of NB's Working Families? None of them have had real jobs in their lives except to feed off of the poor and underprivileged in urban areas. People need to open their eyes to these types. Unelect them and stop them from driving business out of not only NB but the entire state of CT forever!
When WalMart announced problems with their New Britain store a couple of years ago, one of the major problems was reported to be, employee pilfering and helping "friends" not pay for items at the register. Despite management changes, it appears nothing has changed there. About harassment of minorities, that's a laugh; if you are not a minority person at the NB WalMart you are treated differently. Sherwood, O'Brien and company will see again what they have wrought with their ultra liberal approach to every problem, i.e., blame someone or some thing.
isn't the working families party a communist group? ............................... Pretty darn close ................................ Working Families Party was first organized in 1998 by a coalition of labor unions, ACORN and other community organizations along with members of the now-inactive national New Party,
The New Parties strategy was to change states' election rules to allow fusion voting - a method of voting that allows minor parties to have their own ballot line with which they can either endorse their own candidates or endorse the candidates of other parties.
Essentially they were (The New Party) and still are (The Working families party) a tool used by the Socialist wing of the Democratic Party.
The stated goal is to cross endorse socialist leaning Candidates essentially muting the moderate and conservative members of the Democratic Party.
Using these tactics they have in some cases effectively taken over some city and town councils. Last election they brought the likes of Alderman Sherwood and Co. to town. They also cross endorsed the liberal incumbents ensuring that they could push an ultra liberal agenda on the City Council Left unchecked they can be very dangerous to our democratic society.
I can believe the pilfering thing. I once witnessed a young child filling his pockets with "blank" WalMart gift cards. I said something to the parents, who said it didn't matter because they had no cash value. A manager walked by and I told him--he shrugged and let them go. I can only imagine what else walked out of that store. Customer service is a big ZIP at that location.

This relationship to ACORN is very interesting, because Alderman Sherwood has denied any connection to ACORN in the past, but wasn't he cross endorsed by this group that has been described as "dangerous to our democratic society."

Yes Alderman may deny his associatoion with Acorn but his office is located in the same building where he works. At 70 Arbor Street, Hartford, Conn.
I received a phone call today from "Katie" of the Working Failies Party. Immediately, I told Katie I wasn't interested in anything she had to say or sell. I said, "how do I know who you are and what it is you represent. I said,"Katie who and from where? She said "Katie _ _ _ _ _ from the WFParty and I'm not selling anything"; I said, " yes you are , you are selling a philosophy with which I do not agree" and hung up the phone.
Coincidence that I should receive this call today? I don't think so. OK! Now there will be somebody writing in saying I was rude and crude to Katie. Sorry Katie, you took the job. As they say at Home Depot (?) you've got questions? We've got answers.
I received a call from Working Families, too, a few days ago. When the woman identified who she was calling for, I told her I wanted nothing to do with that organization, don't call again, and I hung up on her. 2 minutes later, she called again, I didn't answer...she left a message saying she wanted to take a survey...haven't heard from them again. I guess they aren't included on the "Don't Call" list.
Hopefully, Wal*Mart will reconsider leaving New Britain. Located near 2 low income apartment complexes..Corbin Heights and Malikowski Circle, the store employs people in these areas. They have many quality products, many at very affordable prices. I for one prefer not to shop on the Berlin Turnpike. The Working Families are a screwball bunch; trying to cause trouble whenever possible...they should stay away from job producing companies
Walmart had a large store on Slater Road that they closed before deciding on a smaller Walmart venue on Farmington Avenue. Maybe they felt they could better manage their losses in a smaller building. It was reported two years ago that theft from within and customers who were helping themselves might close the doors. How often do you see a Walmart fail? How many small venue Walmarts have you seen? I am sad to see the store go. Although it didn't offer a full selection of items, it was convenient especially for those who walked there. The bad people ruin everything for the good people. Same old in New Britain.
Alderman Catanzaro clearly shows his ignorance if he is quoted accurately in this article, but it is an ignorance that is understandable, because like most members of the city council, he has been supported most of his adult life at the expense of the taxpayers.
His statements to the Herald show that he apparently does not understand that a business like Wal-mart exists solely to make a profit and is not in business to support the social ills of a dying city. His quote that the company failed to take into account the needs of the employees and the people of the community exemplifies his ignorance about the business world.
The only matter that a company is concerned with is whether or not the store is making money, and if not, it is the responsibility of the company's board of directors to either make the store profitable and if that is not possible, then they must cut the cancer.
This exemplifies why our city council is so out of touch with reality. Look around the table and count how many members of the council have ever run a business, or even worked in a private sector job where their employer was motivated by profit. The majority of them either work for the government, or some other social organization that is funded directly or indirectly at taxpayer expense, and this is the main reason why they just don't get it.
It has become public recently that many of them do not own property in the city and that others don't even own up to their responsibility to pay their car taxes on time while expecting the rest of us to pay.
Isn't it about time that the council represented the people who are paying the bills that they create? It seems appropriate that with upcoming municipal elections, we should look for candidates who understand what it is like to run a business and need to make a profit for survival. At the bare minimum, how about people who will have to pay the ever growing taxes this council likes to pass on its citizenry? Then maybe the council will understand the people that their decisions impact the most--the taxpayers.

Heard this on the radio - there go 162 jobs!

A Wal-mart spokesman said this is the first store Wal-mart has ever closed in Connecticut.
Now New Britain can finally be proud to be first in something!!!!!

Sounds like someone knows who was involved in running Wal-mart out of town. You decide.
Why don't we raise their taxes even higher?
Don't we have the power?
Maybe we can use it to store freight. Word is New Britain is a good place for that!!
Another example of the fine representation we here in New Britain get from our state delegation.
Eventualy if things keep going in the same direction tax wise you will see even more buisnesses moving out.
But hey Connecticet has "rich" folks who will be supporting us.
I'll just move into one of the new freight containers they are so hot for.

I don't blame them from moving after a bunch of agitators were picketing their store!

You be the judge
Isn't there another Alderman that is some sort of "official" with ACORN too?
A google search for "Phil Sherwood ACORN" brings up a list of articles, you should try it and see for yourself!
