Here are the clues.



Clue # 1

O’Brien, with reported contributions of $39,733.57, more than doubled the Stewart campaign’s sum of $17,410. The only other campaigns to collect anything over the $1,000 that calls for disclosure were by Alderman Greg Gerratana who collected $9,400 during his campaign for tax collector and Alderman Phil Sherwood who reported contributions of about $2,500.

Clue # 2

While many of the same items were listed as expenditures by the O’Brien campaign, a $6,250 payment to Citizens Services Inc., in Harford for campaign consultants stood out. Although there were no phone listings for the company in Hartford, a call to the address of the Working Families Party proved successful.

Clue #3

The remaining 16 organizations were from as far away as New York, Litchfield, East Haven and Middletown, to locate a few.

Clue #4

John Green, director of WFP, confirmed the money had been paid to CSI for payment to canvassers and some mailing design work and that, “Citizens Services Inc., is the staffing firm that employs folks who work at Working Families. It’s a consulting firm … that assigns people to work on mostly progressive political campaigns.”

So it appears that the WFP is actively involved in some local Democratic Party campaigns.

I am left wondering why all these folks from outside of the city, even outside of the state are so involved in the New Britain municipal elections?

John McNamara should resign for selling out the DTC. Tim O’Brien, Greg Garratano, Phil Sherwood and friends should find another town to meddle with.

So are Mr. Obrien and his WFP/DTC slate really interested in New Britain?

The full nature of the relationship between ACORN and Citizens Services Inc is not known but this much is clear: both share the same address in
New Orleans and officials with CSI refer folks to ACORN for questions about “political consulting” and “Get-Out-The-Vote” activities. These are questions that mainstream media should examine.

Perhaps Tim O'Brien can take the others and move back to Manchester...that would be an excellent way for them to serve New Britain.

I was appalled by the shoddy reporting of the story appearing in the Oct. 13 edition of the New Britain Herald about O'Brien pushing for tax reform.

With all due respect, James Craven should have placed "paid for by the committee to elect Tim O'Brien" after this so called news story.

Where is the opposing point of view or even a point of view from an objective observer? He allows Mr. O’Brien to make unchallenged and questionable assertions about potential sources of income that simply do not exist. He dropped in a gratuitous and self-serving non sequitur from Mr. McNamara about his party’s candidate. And he did nothing to explain the claim that an overwhelming majority of taxpayers have seen their property taxes go up, when in fact Mayor Stewart has held the line or reduced our mill rate during the past six years. Where is the call to the mayor, his campaign manager, the chair of the Republican Town Committee, or the chair of the Board of Finance for comment?


I’m very disappointed with this story, as a candidate, a resident and as a former journalist. Mr. Craven and the New Britain Herald can and should have done a much better job with this one. Suppose I claim that we can raise $1 million in additional revenue by making sure all dog owners register their pets, would he check that out or just print it?
