Why Costco Is Dead / DOT's Hesitation, and Town of Newington's Rights Stand in Way of Costco ?
NEWINGTON — While New Britain officials signaled their intention to move ahead with plan for a Costco warehouse on Hartford Road adjacent to Target, the project hinges on a land swap that must meet the approval of skeptical Town of Newington leaders and the state Department of Transportation (DOT}.
The Costco land in question is boxed between Route 9 and the Stanley Golf Course in New Britain. It’s owned by DOT but Newington has the right of first refusal should the state wish to sell the property.
The contentious deal began last year under the leadership of former Mayor Timothy Stewart. He and Costco negotiated the relocation of three holes at Stanley Golf Course across Hartford Road into A.W. Stanley Park to make room for the store officials say will bring in at least $475,000 in annual property tax revenue to New Britain along with more than 200 jobs.
But the Costco plan has been opposed by city residents and a number of NB City officials, as it involved losing cherished city parkland.
Good to see a Republican is being appointed to keep an eye on so many sleazy Democrats!
The sleaze is already coming out of the woodwork to oppose this appointment, apparently because elected Democrats are terrified for the first time in Connecticut history, they may actually be held accountable to obeying the law.
Imagine that, Democrats being held accountable to actually obeying the law?
I'll believe that when I see it!
Soon I will be expecting Websters to add "Democrat" to the definition of "scum"
