Franklin J. Smith, Sr.

Franklin J. "Frank" Smith, Sr., 81, of New Britain, passed away Sunday (June 7, 2015) at Riverside Rehab Center in East Hartford. Born in Madawaska, Maine, he lived in New Britain most of his life. Frank was a US Air Force veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. A graduate of Hillyer College, he was a Structural Engineer for Patent Scaffolding until his retirement. Frank was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and was active in town politics. He was a member of the Republican Town Committee; was vice chairman of the New Britain Housing Authority; and was a former member of the Mattabassett District. Frank also ran a local political blog and served as a Town Constable and Justice of the Peace. He volunteered all over the state giving talks to school children about the dangers of smoking and taught and assisted new laryngectomees on the use of speech devices.

Surviving are four sons, a brother, several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Calling hours are Wednesday 5 to 7 PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. Funeral Services and burial with military honors will be private at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery.
